Strange growth disorders in humans

There are some conditions that cause abnormal growth but nt always.

At birth, babies are generally around 50cm (20in) in length. When growth is complete (in Western Europe at about 18 years), body length will have increased by about 3 times and weight about 20 times.

Growth is triggered by a powerful hormone that occurs naturally in the body.

Growing Tall

Humans grow most rapidly in the first year after birth but this is followed by steady growth in childhood. Growth and development depend on many factors. Our genes are important, but we only fulfill their potential if we have sufficient nutrition.

Medical syndromes that cause people to be tall include:

GIGANTISM: A height disorder caused by over-production of a growth hormone in the pituitary gland.

MARFAN SYNDROME: A inherited connective tissue disorder that affects many prts of the body. Marfan Syndrome is thought to affect about one person in 5000.

SOTOS SYNDROME: Very rare condition that leads to tall stature, large hands and feet and poor co-ordination and circulation.

KLINEFELTER SYNDROME: A male genetic disorder caused by an additional sex chromosome.
