Growing up in a small apartment in the city, there is hardly a garden to look at. But my mum who loves flowers would maintain a few pots of greens outside our house. I didn’t have the patience she had, and I could not see the meaning behind gardening and found the whole experience just a waste of time.
As I grew older, I began to see seeds as things that would help us save money. The seeds from the chilli that we ate would go into the pots and produce more chilli for our future consumption. Onion would go into the soil and produce spring onion, something which worked well as a garnish for dishes and as an ingredient of its own for a dish. Exploring the possible fruits of seeds from my dishes soon became my mission. Which of the seeds would grow in a small pot? Which of these would produce not only one fruit but many from a single seed. I was only a teenager and my thinking was simple. But many years later as I saw an article about how seeds died and grew, I recalled of how my seeds too had at one point died in order to let me enjoy its fruits.
Once the seed dies, its mission begins. A bud grows out of it and emerges from the soil that covered it. Each day it would take in what it has been provided, the nutrients from the soil, the water we gave it, the sun above its head and the air that surrounded it. With a little patience, it would soon grow tall, it was no longer just receiving but it began to give back. It produced green chilli which would soon turn red, and become a dish on my table, satisfying my need.
It showed me not only a product but it showed me of life. How we too grew under our parents’ care and one day we would be able to work, we would have the ability to provide for them and satisfy their need.
