Growing delphinium – Part 1

While Delphinium are traditionally associated with old cottage gardens, these stately plants can easily fit into any type of garden.

Delphinium come in a range of color from a black/purple to pink to white, and several shades in between. They tend to grow to about 6′ in height, but dwarf plants are also available, reaching to about 3′ tall. Larkspur is another possibility if you do not want tall plants, as these reach anywhere from 18″ to 24″ in height.

Delphinium are a perennial, and require moderate light. You will want to plant them in a well draining soil, and in an area that you can spike them if they start to bend. They will also spread if you allow them to do so, although much slower than many other plants.

The spikes of flowers that they produce will attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

These plants are easy care, so why not plant a couple and enjoy them?
