Grow Taller News

Growing elephant ears is maybe one of the easiest plants to grow. I have elephant ears growing on both sides of my house. Elephant ears will keep coming back year after year. Mine are grown in soft dirt and they get about five or six feet tall.

The only thing you have to do is plant the seeds and you can be sure they will grow. Don’t grow them in hard dirt, they will not grow as tall or as fast. You must water them at first, but after that they don’t need much at all. The elephant ears die in the late fall and they come back in the spring. Elephant ears love warm weather. Take it I live in South Carolina, we have a really cold winter and a even hotter summer.

If you plant elephant ears and they die out in the fall, don’t worry, they only take about one week to get fully grown. If you are thinking about growing some and you have a good location, you will be very pleased with how they turn out.

Big and tall men really can ooze sexuality with their look, though it takes skill to do this and in an attempt to help a man create the sexy look, let’s begin with a look in the mirror, and a few home truths that need establishing before going to buy that outfit that will turn the ladies heads.

HEIGHT

Tall men are always an attractive proposition for women. We like to gain strength from our men and the illusion of height can do just that, although dressed wrongly, it can overwhelm and intimidate. The way to look at height when buying clothes is to buy those clothes that don’t add an additional element of height to the look. For example, black clothing is a slimming kind of look, though by adding slimness to height, you create a taller image than exists already. Clever use of color with the touch of black can be very sexy indeed.

WIDTH

A beer gut doesn’t look that sexy but admitting you have one is the first step to doing something about it. Nothing turns a woman off more than seeing a man bundled together in the middle with a beer gut hanging over his trousers. Once you admit that you have one, you can then find ways to present that beer gut in a sexier manner. It really is possible.

OVER-SIZED SHOULDERS

While men have the impression that the ladies like that muscular look, it is actually more common for ladies to like less muscle, and more stature. Here, stand in front of the mirror and look how you stand because a lot of your presentation depends upon habits that may have been built up over the years, and slouching really is a bad one, and certainly not that appealing. Shoulders back, and look at how it makes you present yourself. If you have over-sized shoulders, this can be tackled in the dressing.

LONG LEGS

How long are your legs ? Are they thin and pin-sticky or are they average for your body ? Are they short ? The illusion can be changed by choice of the items you buy.

Having taken a realistic look at body shape, let’s hit the shops and get you up to scratch and ready for the ladies.

SHIRTS

Cotton shirts are rather nice, although to get a classic look, polo shirts in nice shades that are darker than pastel though lighter than navy are a great choice if you have a nice neck. A tan looks rather good too, and this is one of the easiest areas for a man to tan, since it is exposed to air more often than other parts of the body. A shirt is an asset in the sexy stakes, and is certainly a more sexy item than T-shirts on a plus

If you are looking for a plant to provide beautiful waves of color and is as easy to care for as it is to look at, look no further. Whether you choose a double flowered variety, which resemble tiny roses, or a single flowered variety, you won’t be disappointed.

With a myriad of colors from which to choose, you will be hard pressed to choose only one. Luckily, you won’t need to. Impatiens are wonderfully versatile so you can plant them all over your garden-anywhere you need a splash of color. Whether you plant in full sun or full shade your impatiens will spread to form a blanket of color that will make you the envy of the neighborhood. A word of caution, however: if you plant impatiens in a sunny area be sure you provide ample water every day. They wilt quickly and really do much better in deep shade. I plant them in shade so deep that even Hostas won’t grow there, but the impatiens thrive.

Wait until after any danger of frost has passed before planting. Buy small, compact seedlings, preferably with one flower blooming (so you can be sure what color you are really getting). Gently loosen the rootball, and plant 4 to 6 inches apart in soil that has been prepared by digging in compost. Don’t plant at midday, as too much heat can stress your seedlings. Firm the soil around your plants and water well.

Impatiens can grow up to 28 inches tall, and have a spread with a range of anywhere from 8 to 24 inches. They are very prolific, and by the end of the summer will have used up every bit of space you give them.

You will not need to deadhead your impatiens. They are self cleaning, meaning that old blooms are replaced by new ones. They will bloom all spring and summer, dying back after the first frost. They are resistant to most diseases, and animals and insects don’t usually seem too interested in them. Keep them well watered and you will find that they are a wonderful investment.

Because they come in so many colors, solids and stripes, they go well with many other plants. They look beautiful with ferns and Hostas in the shade, or under taller growing plants like salvias in the sun. They can easily be grown in any kind of container for added color on the patio, deck or in a window box.

Fall cleanup is a breeze, too. Simply pull them up and toss them onto your compost pile. They are soft, and rot very well.

If you like the colors and variety that you chose, you can take cuttings in the fall and root them over the winter. Cut shoots, and dip the ends in rooting powder. Plant them in a try of perlite (a growing medium). Keep moist and you should be able to plant your new seedlings in the spring.

Bachelor Buttons or Centaurea Cyanus as they are known botanically is an annual. It grows in all zones self-sowing to its heart’s content. Some call it the cornflower because of its tendency of frequently popping up in and around the borders of corn fields. In some areas they have become a wild flower and make a nice addition to any meadow with its traditional blue flowers.

The more common seed mixes on the market contain flowers in pink, burgundy, white and rose colored flowers as well as the blue. If allowed to hybridize on their own the blue will not produce a true seed . That is to say the blue color might be supplanted by the other colors if the bees pollinate all of them together. If you wish to collect your own seed and to have a ready supply of seeds that produce the distinct and coveted blue cornflower try to keep them away from Bachelor Buttons of other colors. Planting them in opposite ends of the yard might help. Perhaps the bees will cooperate. If you end up with all colors but blue you’ll have to try again and buy the only blue varieties.

Bachelor Buttons got their name when they were frequently used as boutonnieres. These pretty plants grow from 1 to 2 foot tall. It branches nicely if given enough room. It has narrow 2-3 inch long, green, gray-tinged leaves. Flowers are 1 -1 1/2 inches across . They generally have no fragrance but the butterflies like to settle themselves down on them and the bees are always buzzing happily around for the nectar.

The Bachelor Button likes any average garden soil and is quite drought tolerant. They like a less acidic soil so add a bit of lime where you want to plant these unless you know your soil’s pH level. They make a great addition to a cut flower arrangement lasting relatively long. As with all annuals, snipping off flowers at intervals will prevent the plant from going to seed too quickly and will promote more flowering. Caring for the Bachelor Button couldn’t be easier. Feed with a mild fertilizer or your own homemade compost tea as you would your other annuals and perennials.

One of the more popular and widely available Bachelor Button in garden centers and nurseries is “Jubilee Gem” with deep blue flowers. It comes in a bushy plant about a foot high. The very popular “Polka Dot” strain comes in all the usual cornflower colors. These are sold mostly in seed form.

One plant which technically isn’t a Bachelor Button though it is often mistakenly called such is Centaurea Montana. This one I highly recommend for the superior flower size and color and that you don’t have to replant it every year makes it that much more welcome. This one is actually a perennial which needs to be divided ever two years to keep it happy. You can easily find this on sale in most good quality garden centers, Home Depot or Lowes. The bushy plant grows 1 – 2 feet tall and wide. It has seven inch long grayish-green leaves and the flowers are a whooping 3 inches across. They even look as pretty when they are all gone to seed as they do freshly opened.

The seeds of the Bachelor Buttons should be sown in early spring but those seeds that were left behind in the garden over winter will readily sprout all on their own. In mild winter areas a late summer or fall sowing is fine. I’m certain you can find a nice place to put this curious, unassuming little plant. It has long been a childhood favorite for meadow bouquets picked especially for Moms all over the country. Here’s hoping you can pick your own by the next growing season.

Cannas are so easy to grow, and such a joy once they bloom. The taller variety can make a nice privacy hedge with its tropical looking foliage and brilliant blooms. For the longest time, I resisted the urge to go with any flowers that required bulb lifting. I finally gave in, though. They are so beautiful.

When they get the winter reprieve, it strengthens and gives them the heighth. I took some of my tall canna bulbs with me and planted them in my flower gardens in Florida. They don’t have the freeze to contend with, so they are permanently stationed in the same flowerbed. Yet, they only get a couple feet high, whereas the same family of cannas up north reach the rain gutters of the garage.

To store them, save onion or citrus bags made with netting material. this allows for necessary ventilation. Also it is convenient for hanging in crawl space, or storage shed. In the springtime, dig a shallow hole and replant. They need light on the rhizomes, so don’t plant them very deep. They look good the whole time hey are growing due to the huge foliage, and expect to see brilliant blooms by at least July. Water once a week.

Another nice factor about cannas is sharing. The huge rhizomes keep growing year after year, giving the opportunity to share with neighbors and friends.

Tips for Women and Girls (I also include advice for men!):

*Wear shirts that are fitted and close to the body.

*Choose hip length tops-avoid both cropped and overly long shirts.

*Try empire waist and baby doll style shirts.

*Avoid baggy clothes at all costs.

*Layer with fitted and cropped jackets, cardigans, or hoodies.

*Select coats that are knee length or shorter and are fitted to your body.

*Consider monochromatic outfits.

*When wearing different colors, try keeping them in the same value like a light top and light pants. Avoid wearing a light top with dark pants or vice versa.

*Buy straight leg, fitted pants if you are thin, or boot cut if you are not.

*When choosing pants, make sure they are long enough but not too long.

*Low rise jeans add length to your torso but too low and they’ll shorten your legs.

*Wear belts that are similar in color to your outfit.

*When buying skirts, wear as short as you can get away with for your body type.

*Pencil, mini and knee length A-line skirts are elongating.

*Please avoid cropped pants at all costs! They’ll shorten your legs.

*Shorts are a better option-again, the shorter the better.

*When wearing a skirt or shorts choose wedges, sandals with a slight heel, wedge boots, or flats with a little lift.

*With pants try a platform, kitten, stiletto, or other type of heel. Thinner, taller heels are preformed. The thickest heel you should choose is a platform.

*Wear small prints! Forgo any large ones which will make you look too small.

*Vertical stripes always lengthen and are especially great as pinstripes.

*Keep your accessories proportioned to your body. No big purses or jewelry!

*Long necklaces and thin, dangling earrings work well on you.

*Appreciate your height and remember the benefits that come from being short!

Advice for guys:

*Don’t wear baggy jeans-they’ll only make you look shorter.

*Choose jeans and pants that are just loose enough instead.

*Pick dark wash, long jeans that elongate you.

*Buy t-shirts that are actually your size.

*Choose well fitting button downs and unbutton the top two buttons.

*Wear belts that are similar in depth of color to your pants.

*Pinstripes always elongate you.

*Darker colors make you look taller.

*Some men’s shoes actually come with a slight heel.

*Be confident-that’s always sexy!

I have always been worried about my height. I’ve always felt like, I was too tall. when I was younger, I was taller, than most of the girls. It horrified me when a short guy was standing next to me. Making it so obvious, how tall I was for my age.

It took me a long time, to look at myself differently, and not even care about the height thing. A friend of mine told me that, height did not matter, because when we are in a vertical position, we are the same height. He was a short man, and that is what even influenced me, to give a short guy a chance. He is the first short guy, that I was interested in my life, I really wish it had went further. He was my best friend. Since I am 5’9″, I don’t feel comfortable about wearing heels, on a date with a man, who is shorter than I am. Which can change the whole outfit, and you know how hard it was, to pick that one.

So I think that maybe, you should cook dinner for a short guy, if you have a date with him. I feel that would really be rubbing, the height thing in his face. I am not comfortable, about bending over to kiss my date good night, if he is short than me, it is kinda awkward. I guess it wouldn’t be so bad, if we were sitting down or something. Sitting down, while they stand, is cool. It took me a little while to get use to my short best friend. Keeping him as a friend, help me out, although he was a great guy. He might have been thinking the same thing about me. We never explored a relationship, although we loved each other, very much. Kinda like that movie Brown Sugar, and how there friendship was.

Upside-down tomato crop!

Being an eco concious soul, I always find it challenging to recycle various items around the house. One ‘monster’ is the dreaded plastic milk bottle. I have discovered a novel method of rescuing this waste from landfill, whilst providing an abundant crop of tomatoes for my family.

Occassionally I purchase an exceptional looking tomato from the grocery store, slice it, and place the slices onto paper towels. Once the pulp is dry, the paper towels themselves are placed into a container, and lightly covered with a rich compost and a generous spray of water. I like to start them off in late winter, and I put them outside in an area protected from the extremes. This allows them to get a hardy start, rather than move them to the great outdoors when a few inches tall, only to have the weaker plants die off. By doing this, I already know how many plants I will have.

Justin is growing tall.JPG

Take a plastic, gallon sized milk bottle and poke a hole through the side, at the bottom. This will allow for ample drainage as well as serving a later purpose. The hole must have a corresponding hole on the other side. It is here you thread a piece of heavy wire or cord through. Fill the bottle to within and inch of the top with the same compost your seedlings were ‘born’ in. Carefully plant your young tomato plant, using a stick to dig the hole. You will need to poke some dried grass or straw in around the plant to retain moisture.

Leave these in the morning sun, checking the moisture content every 3-4 days.

Once the plants are around 8-10 inches tall, hang the bottles upside down and secure to a verandah rail, tree or old clothes line wire. After a few days the plants will begin to turn upward toward the sky, and will begin to grow up and around the milk bottle. You may want to secure the branches together once they have curled up and around the top of the bottle to provide some strength and stop the weight of the fruit from splitting the branches away from the main stem.

For pest control, I simply use a mild soap and water solution and spray all new blossoms. This works very effectivley and is a great bottom-of-the-jar use for the last portion of your dishwashing soap. This method of growing tomatoes is a peculiar site to behold, a novel way of getting your children interested in growing and eating all types of fruit and vegetables, and also a great way to repuropse some items which were otherwise destined to become landfill.

I love a fresh tomato any time of the year. Don’t you? I love my tomatoes so much, that when I am eating others that were store bought and they are not in season (which is like every month of the year at the store) I pick them off and set the aside. Why eat cardboard?

My Gardening approach is simple, for I don’t have a lot of time and I am sure that you don’t have a lot of time either. If I had the time to go out and weed every day, water my plants, talk to them and do everything everyone tells me that I should be doing for them, I probably would. Here are the simple truths to what I am about when it comes to me and my green thumb. I like it easy and productive.

Growing Tall?

At first, I always used plastic for ground cover. Not the plastic that is sold at the stores, that is as bad as poison. The garden soil needs to be able to breathe. So I use the plastic that comes from the lumber store that covers the wood. This plastic is woven and makes it so that the ground can breathe and at the same time eliminate the weeds. Black side up, white side down. I played white vs black one year…black is best for the garden.

As for fertilizers, I keep it simple. I don’t use much of anything other than one simple rule. What I use this year, I won’t use next year. One year I will do all leaves and till it into the ground. The next I will use manure. The next I will find some compost. The next I start over with leaves. Or if I am feeling really “vigorous”, I proclaim it the year of the Jubilee as found in the Bible and do nothing for the ground, for it is the year of rest.

I have a few variety that I buy as seedlings over and over. When buying, I buy the ones that look like plastic. Meaning the darkest shade of green. I also pick the tallest plant and it can have its first flowers. I don’t buy plants that come in larger pots that are super big… that’s just a waste of money. All my plants get at least 5 feet tall eventually, some have even grown to be 9 feet.

“Is that one suppose to be that tall?”

“Sure…”

So we have bought which ever type you prefer and are ready to shove them into the ground. Wait!, not so fast, the next part is the most important. There are certain plants that have the ability to grow roots up its entire stem. Tomato is one of those beauties. Look at the seedling and find, counting from the top, the top four branches. After identifying them, pinch off all the remaining branches. Dig your hole as deep as the plant is, loosening up the dirt, and fill the hole
