Short and Male – Canadian Documentary on Short People

S&M: Short and Male is a 2008 Canadian documentary directed by Howard Goldberg which examines the obstacles that short statured men face every day in life, love and work. The film was featured at the 2008 Hot Docs film festival and premiered on CTV in May 2008.

I watched this movie and I think it nicely sums up the problems that short people experience in their lives and shows certain solutions as well. However, I do think it is slightly exaggerated. For example, the part where women are asked to choose which male they are more attracted to from 5 given options, the tallest male is labeled with #1 and this instinctively associates him with “the best” position. The man was also more attractive in the face than the shorter counterparts. No wonder all the females choose him. I think the test would have been more objective if the men changed places each time and where shown from their backs.

The idea about short support group also looked pretty laughable if you ask me. If you are short, the last thing you want to do is drawing attention to your height by creating a short support association and advertise it publicly on the streets of NYC.

The movie also has some parts about leg lengthening surgery that I wrote about in earlier posts. If you are considering this surgery, you should definitely check the movie out.

On the other hand, when height goes above 6 feet 4 inches it starts to leave an affect on health, so there surely must be a limit. I highly doubt that we will be seeing generations where 7 feet or more is the norm.
